Could open source and ethical social media be the future?
Let’s be frank. We knew that the big social media companies were always out for profit, and not for the benefit of the end users. They were never meant to be a community; their sole existance was to extract value from the end user, the end product.
Over the past year, there has been significant change in the world, with the emergence of a new world order. We cannot deny that the so called tech bros, running major technology companies, especially in the US, are now having a significant influence in politics. From these meetins in the whitehouse the flattering gifts being presented ot Trump.
Right now we are regarded as the product amoung these major social media giants, like the likes of Meta and X. We also know that controversial role that musk is playing in US politics, and that controverial performace he had at Trump’s second inauguration.
When it comes to open source, we think of open source software projects. But open source software isn’t limited to software. There are open source social media networks operated for users such as Mastodon and Bluesky. These aim to empower the user, putting them back in control.
